Adaptation and Survival: When Solutions Are No Longer Enough
We must prepare and plan for an extremely severe and prolonged survival
scenario. There should be Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C, with clear priorities for
what must be protected first. We must consider the possibility that the climate
crisis will go far beyond the conditions governments normally include in their
planning. The scenario ahead may exceed the ability of governments to control
it. One published warning describes a future in which global sea levels rise by
more than 100 feet—approximately 30 metres—over the next 150 years, submerging
ports, coastal cities, river deltas, and valuable agricultural land, while
forcing millions of people to relocate. Under such conditions, adaptation would
no longer mean preserving every building, every coastline, or the old way of
life. The priority would be to keep people alive, maintain access to water and
food, prevent the spread of disease, keep essential services operating, and
stop the failure of one system from bringing down others. We must not wait
until water enters the streets, the soil dries out, and frightened populations
begin to move. By then, many of the choices available to us today may no longer
exist.
Perhaps when Marshall Vian Summers first made these warnings publicly
available in The Great Waves of Change, published in 2009, the world was a much
safer place. Many of us may have dismissed such statements as fantasy,
self-promotion, exaggeration, false information, or claims without scientific
support. Yet decades earlier, in 1986, Ulrich Beck had already described the
emerging modern world as a “risk society”: a society increasingly shaped not
only by the production of wealth, but also by human-made technological,
environmental, and global risks that can spread across borders and threaten
entire populations. In a similar way, reports concerning extraterrestrial life
have for decades been treated as ridiculous or fictional. Governments and parts
of the media have also been accused of presenting these subjects as
unscientific or imaginary, contributing to a situation in which the public does
not take them seriously.
This attitude is now changing. NASA continues to treat unidentified
anomalous phenomena as a legitimate subject for organized data collection and
scientific investigation, and its UAP FAQ page was updated in May 2026
(National Aeronautics and Space Administration [NASA], 2026). At the same time,
the United States government has created a dedicated UAP collection in the
National Archives and, in February 2026, directed federal agencies to identify,
review, declassify, and release additional records concerning UAP, UFOs, and
alleged extraterrestrial life (National Archives and Records Administration
[NARA], 2026; U.S. Department of War, 2026). Taken together, these developments
may be interpreted as signs that official institutions are preparing the public
for a broader and more gradual disclosure of information that was previously
dismissed, stigmatized, or kept outside ordinary public discussion. However,
the released material has not yet established that any observed object is an
extraterrestrial spacecraft, and NASA’s current official position remains that
it has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life or evidence that UAP
are extraterrestrial (NASA, 2026). Is this part of a systematic lie and a
broader cover-up??
Every household should know the main dangers in its area and have more
than one way to receive official warnings. People should decide in advance
where they will go, how they will leave, how family members will contact one
another and who will help children, older people, disabled people, people with
chronic illnesses and neighbours who live alone. Drinking water, basic food,
essential medicines, first-aid supplies, lights, backup power, copies of
important documents and basic sanitation materials should be ready before a
warning arrives. People living near rivers, floodplains, unstable slopes,
fire-prone land or low coastlines should identify safe routes, practise
evacuation and take official evacuation orders seriously. Extreme heat must
also be treated as a medical emergency: people need access to cool spaces,
reliable information, drinking water and direct support for those most likely
to become ill. (IFRC)
Governments and organizations must prepare for the breakdown of several
systems at the same time. A flood can close roads, cut electricity, contaminate
water, interrupt food deliveries and overwhelm hospitals in a single chain of
events. Warning systems must therefore cover several hazards, reach people
quickly and tell them exactly what action to take. Hospitals, schools, water
companies, power providers, communication networks and food distributors need
tested continuity plans, backup equipment, protected data, alternative supply
routes and trained replacement teams. Municipalities need public cooling
centres, emergency shelters, evacuation transport, accessible warnings, regular
drills and reserves that can be released before shortages become panic. Recovery
plans must exist before disaster, and damaged infrastructure must not simply be
rebuilt with the same weaknesses. Early-warning systems, heat–health action
plans, disaster preparedness and “build back better” policies are established
measures for reducing deaths and disruption. (World Meteorological

Some places will not remain safely habitable. Governments must stop
approving new development in locations that cannot be defended and begin
identifying the communities, hospitals, power stations, roads, ports and water
systems that may eventually need to move. Relocation must not begin only after
homes have been destroyed and land has lost its value. It requires land,
housing, employment, schools, health care, legal protection, community
participation and long-term funding. The IPCC states that planned relocation
can remove coastal risk and may become the only feasible option where
protection becomes unaffordable and other forms of adaptation reach their
limits. Because such changes take decades, delaying preparation until the
danger is obvious can make an orderly transition impossible. (IPCC)
There may be no complete solution in a crisis of this scale. Adaptation
can become triage: deciding what can still be protected, what must be transformed,
what must be moved and whose life is in immediate danger. The IPCC concludes
that adaptation becomes less effective as warming increases, that some
ecosystems have already reached hard limits and that losses and damages will
grow as more human and natural systems reach their limits. At the same time,
current adaptation finance remains far below estimated needs, leaving lives,
livelihoods and entire economies exposed. (IPCC)
The message should therefore be direct: do not prepare only for a short
emergency followed by a return to normal. Prepare for repeated shocks,
permanent losses, mass displacement and periods when several vital systems fail
together. Cut emissions rapidly, but do not confuse hope with readiness.
Protect vulnerable people first. Move critical infrastructure before the roads,
budgets and institutions needed to move it begin to fail. Store knowledge as
carefully as food and water. Build cooperation before fear turns communities
against one another. Do not reconstruct yesterday’s danger. Delay is not
neutral—it decides who will face the disaster without protection.
